Advocacy News: Clarity in Council Minutes policy marked as complete

At the January 2014 Board of Directors meeting a policy titled Clarity in Council Minutes was adopted as a result of requests from our members to extrapolate data from city council minutes during the 2013 municipal elections race. During our research it was determined that specific information was difficult to extrapolate from municipal council minutes, including determining the direction of council, based on the information provided. Recommendations from our policy included providing more detail and clarity in motions, recording individual voting records of each motion and to make available a single resource to search motions.

During the past year the City of Medicine Hat has been working towards improving their access to information through the ‘Minutes Plus’ software. This new software, launched in December 2014, encompasses many of the recommendations we had sent to the city within our Clarity in Council Minutes policy. Any member of the public is now able to search municipal minutes online by date, keyword or meeting type, the motions contain more information and are more clear, there are documented voting records showing those in favor, against, or absent, and the motions also name those who voted against. Agendas and minutes from the past 24 months can be searched online on the City’s website HERE.

Chamber News: Perrin Beatty named one of the top 10 lobbyists in Canada

The Hill Times, an independently-owned newspaper based in Ottawa producing Canada’s politics and government newsweekly since 1989, recently produced a list of the Top 10 Lobbyists of 2015. The article states ‘The overarching measure for the list is the lobbyist’s influence with government, track record to produce results, and overall reputation. Other factors include the lobbyist’s presence in Ottawa, political affiliation, network, prestige of position, and success in the past year.’ Perrin Beatty, President & CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce is placed 6th on the list.
