South Railway Street 2017 Construction Projects Information Session

The City is planning two major construction projects in 2017. One will take place  on South Railway Street in the Downtown. The other will occur between Kingsway Avenue and the base of Scholten Hill. Pending budget approval, these projects will take place from spring to fall of 2017. The City is seeking public input about project execution at a drop-in information session on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 from 5:00-7:00 pm at the Esplanade Studio Theatre, 401 First St SE. 2017 Municipal Election

The next Municipal and School Board Elections will be held on Monday October 16, 2017. If you are interested in running for Municipal office in 2017 (Mayor or Councilors only) you must complete and file the Application for Candidate Registration and Notice of Intention to Run with the Returning Officer. This document is in addition to the legislated requirements for a candidate to file nomination papers. A Notice of Intention to Run must be filed before a candidate accepts any campaign contributions. This requirement also applies to self-funded candidates.  The registration form can be downloaded from the City’s election website page.  Nomination Day is Monday September 18, 2017. Nomination papers and general information for candidates will be available at the end of July and the Chamber of Commerce is planning to host a forum for candidates in the fall following nomination day.

Business Beat: Where are all of our salsa producers?

When it comes to greenhouse vegetables, Medicine Hat is the provincial leader, representing nearly 70 per cent of Alberta’s total growing area.

Yet with such a large specialty crop sector in Medicine Hat, there are next to no food processors in the city. So where are all of Medicine Hat’s salsa makers?

If Canadian economist Jeff Rubin is correct, globalization is being replaced by local economies, essentially making our world smaller. Certainly we’ve already seen a version of this in the booming popularity of local breweries, with two on tap (pun intended) for Medicine Hat this year alone.

According to the Conference Board of Canada, interest in local food has increased dramatically in the past ten years. As consumers continue to eschew foreign and mass-produced food for home-grown product, there is an opportunity for Medicine Hat entrepreneurs to take advantage and add value to our existing vegetable supply.
